What employers in India expect from a resume

Length
1 page for freshers, 2 pages for experienced roles.
Personal details
Date of birth, marital status, gender and a photo are still seen on Indian resumes, but most companies, especially multinationals and tech firms, now prefer them left off. Never include religion, caste or ID numbers. For government or PSU jobs, follow the format the job notification asks for.
References
Leave off "References available upon request". Employers assume it, and references go on a separate page when they ask.
Spelling
Use Indian English, British spelling spelling (colour, organise).
Location
Give your location as city and state.
Also worth knowing
Freshers usually list CGPA or percentage and graduation year. Stating notice period is common for experienced candidates.

Cover letters in India

Opening
"Dear <name>," if the post names a contact, otherwise "Dear Hiring Manager,".
Closing
"Sincerely," or "Regards,".
Subject line
Add one naming the role you're applying for.

What job posts in India often ask for

Sam checks your resume against requirements like these when a job post lists them: notice period, location or relocation, specific degrees or CGPA cut-offs.
